After sharing some tips with the worship team at ChangePoint Church in Alaska, I realized that I’ve really not focused on that attribute of my giftings here on the blog for a while.
So that being said, I’m going to Try… Key word “Try” to get some thoughts on worship leading every Monday or Tuesday for you worship leaders.
Here is today’s “Tuesday Worship Leading Tips By Carlitos”.

1.  Make tired songs new by pointing out new truths.
You see it happen.  That glazed look not only in the congregations eyes but your bands eyes the second they hear the “do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do dooooo” of the guitar players intro of Mighty to Save.
It’s because there is nothing new about the song after the 43422th time you have done it.
You have to LEAD them.
Lyrics are your friend.
This weekend I introduced the song by pointing out the 2nd verse…
“I know you may have sung this song 1000 times, but the truth of verse two is available for redemption today. No matter the sin of Wednesday night, Monday morning, or last night, Christ wants you desperately and won’t stop pursuing you, so as we sing this today, go to that place of loneliness in your sin, and know that He is there waiting for you, desperately wanting you just the way you are.”
The simple bringing of a lyric to the current situation of the people you stand in front of will make a song brand new.

2.  Don’t talk TO… Do talk WITH.
Nothing drives someone  more crazy than a pointed finger.
It can become easy to lead from a place of self righteousness when there is a microphone in front of you.  So I try to replace words like YOU with US and WE.  I like to tell congregations that WE are going on a journey together towards the heart of God.  Not that I’M leading THEM to the heart of God.  How ridiculous.
Lead from BESIDE them not in FRONT of them.
Lord knows we need all the help we can get so we don’t end up in Bangladesh instead of Heaven.

3.  Lead the weary AND the cheery.
OK.  That was lame.  But you get it.
It becomes SO EASY to just harp on “Those of you who are broken and downcast and in need of Jesus”.
In fact, I’d say most worship leaders I know, myself included, speak primarily to the downcast during a worship set.  As if we are the worship leading version of Dr. Phil trying to pull them out of despair.
News Flash.  Not everyone in front of you is depressed.  In fact, many of them are having the time of their lives.
Don’t forget them.  The joy of the Lord is their strength and many of them have it.
Let them know that you aren’t just waiting for the next bomb to drop on their heads in order to be able to worship God with you on a Sunday morning.

There you go.
Just some vomited up thoughts on this Monday.

Awesome. Thanks. I’ve been thinking about #3 a lot lately. I think sometimes as worship leaders its kind of easy to go that route, helps “emotionalize” the set, if you will. Which is obviously not the right motivation. It comes many times from a lack of planning on my part and all the sudden there it is, my go-to talk to the broken-hearted and downcast. Not that its never appropriate, but we have to remember that slow worship songs aren’t always synonymous with sadness and grief over sins. We can celebrate the redemption. We can celebrate with those who are on the mountaintops, too.

Good words Carlos! I really love the points you made. I think especially the part about making a worship song fresh. I believe that we have to have that reality fresh in our hearts even before we try to lead someone else in the 11,000th rendition of the same song. Unless it is revelatory in our hearts, we cannot lead the people in that revelation. It was so nice to meet you this last weekend. I’m glad you didn’t die from your elk encounter of doom. Next time we’ll arrange a moose to greet you effectively :)

    Good stuff!

I like to get the whole Trinity involved by reminding everyone that through the power of the Spirit we’re joining Jesus in worship of the Father that’s already happening. Hebrews 2:11-12 Jesus “I will declare Your [God's] name to my brothers. In the presence of the congregation I will sing Your praises.”

I love that Jesus mediates our praise. He takes whatever we have to offer and turns it into something worth presenting to God. Worship doesn’t depend on us. Our voices hitch up to Jesus and He makes it worthy. What a relief.

I also like to remember that people don’t always want a rock show at 9am. Sometimes we’ll ease into things, meeting people where they are emotionally and spiritually and journeying with them to where we hope to be.

I am not currently a worship leader, (although I hope that it could happen some day for me), but number 3 is something that I think about a lot! I love singing and getting to worship, but sometimes I definitely feel that there is a lot of praise but not a lot of joy. I just think that we should not only sing about how holy and awesome God is but also how exciting his love can be!

Everything you say makes perfect sense. As someone who sits in the crowd at Church, nothing makes me sadder than when I feel as though I have to be sad to be at church! (That and the breathy talking in between songs.. lol

totally guilty of that last one
