Last night there was a debate.
I was at rehearsal so all I was able to see was my twitter feed and not the debate.
As I was scrolling the feed I was laughing at all my witty friends and their banter.
So I went home and watched the debate.
I thought my guy won.
I was proud.
I had plenty of thoughts.
I learned a bit more about the other guy.
But then I had to go to the bathroom.
So I paused it.
I came back to the sofa and sat down and this was the screen that it was paused on…

It was almost haunting as I stared at the screen.
These 2 men have souls.
They are created by God almighty.
They are loved deeply by a God who does not degrade either of them.
They are 2 men who have wives and kids who cry at night seeing the stress and weight they are under.
They are 2 men who at the end of the next 20 days will still be 2 men who God loves deeper than we can even fathom.
For 15 seconds I stared at a screen where I was looking at the humanity in them.
And I had a thought.
We did it before. We can do it again. We are going to Pray… Backwards…
What do I mean by that?
This Monday night… at 8:30 Central time… Here at ragamuffinsoul.com, we are going to pray for these men, live, online, on video, streaming for the world to see that Christians who disagree on policies can agree on love.

We are going to turn off the news, open our Bibles, and pray for our leaders.

WE WILL PRAY NONPARTISAN
1. Pray that our leaders would grown in Faith. In their relationships with Jesus Christ.
2. Pray for their marriages.
3. Pray for their children.
4. Pray for those around them.
5. Pray for their emotional and physical health.
6. Those on the left will pray blessing on Romney, those on the right will pray blessings on Obama.
7. Those on the left will pray blessing on Romney, those on the right will pray blessings on Obama.
8. Those on the left will pray blessing on Romney, those on the right will pray blessings on Obama.

So. Here. Monday the 22nd. 8:30 pm CENTRAL time.
I bet we could get a few hundred. Or not. We did when we prayed for ourselves.
It would be glorious if we could gather to pray for our leaders.
I’m not sure of any churches around town doing this, so let’s do it here.

See those little banners up top?
Let’s spread those puppies around this here interweb until people are sick of them.
Then Tuesday  you can take them down.
Save those badboys and paste away on your sidebars, facebooks, blogs, ect.
Here is a link to update your twitter and facebook profile pics…

Let’s show the world that we are more than a bunch of politic loving, Jesus tolerating people.
Let’s actually hang out with Jesus as we pray for our leaders.

You seriously stole the words out of my mouth. I woke up incredibly angry this morning, because all I heard about was the debate: Who won, who lost, what gaffes they made, what side is better… It was just a really bad way to start the day. Then I thought of this scripture:

“I beg you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that all of you agree with each other and not be split into groups. I beg that you be completely joined together by having the same kind of thinking and the same purpose.” -1 Corinthians 1:10

Each side is SO offended by the thoughts and views of the other, that we’re completely forgetting that Jesus is at the center of all of it. So, THANK YOU, for speaking up! We need to pray together for our leaders, no matter who ends up winning.

    Be Blessed,
    Liz

My mom pointed out that this is precisely what “the missionaries did over in the Middle East during the Six Day War. Missionaries to the Jews prayed for the Arabs. Missionaries to the Arabs prayed for the Jews. The rest was in God’s hands!”

  • megan

This is a really great idea! I don’t know if I’ll be here on Monday but I think I’m going into integrate it into my prayers. It’s good to be reminded that they’re humans just like us and they need the prayer just as much as we do.

  • http://dirtygirlsministries.com Crystal Renaud

wow… has it really been four years since we did this? that was back when we were friends and you asked me to do stuff. ha! i’ll come hangout. and pray obviously.

Who’s your guy, and the three top reasons he is?

  • L.

    Great idea! I’m in!

  • http://www.prayerpunk.com PrayerPunk

Why is it that we can’t have a real follower of Jesus run? Someone who actually lives the way Christ taught us to? I can’t play this game of picking the lesser of two evils anymore, I can’t support evil even if it’s the lesser of the two.

    • Tiffani Brown

Because if a “real” follower of Jesus ran people who find out his flaws and sinful nature and then Christians would start saying he wasnt a real follower of Jesus…

  • http://www.prayerpunk.com PrayerPunk

Oh, but I will be praying for them. Good initiative!

I LOVE this idea!! I had to go through my Facebook feed last night and hide a lot of my friends because of their nasty, vitriole comments..the sad thing is that many of them go to my church! I am convinced politics would look very different if Christians lived by the Fruit of the Spirit in politics — love, joy, peace, patience…

  • http://www.myblogequalslame.wordpress.com Clayton

I’m in. Twibbon added. Let’s finally show what Christ looks like in the realm of politics.

Praying it backwards? I certainly do pray for our leaders regardless of sides, but things will not change until Christians start impacting their culture instead of focusing on the Sunday morning experience. We have looked at the OT for types and shadows of Christ instead of seeing the OT strategies to take Nations. While the church is counting sheep, we have lost all of the Kingdoms of this world. (Govt., Business, Media, Entertainment, Education, & Family). Jesus always spoke about the ‘Kingdoms’ and we have been impotent as the body of Christ in reaching the world. The most evangelized Continent on Earth- Africa, still has the highest poverty, lack of education, etc… We as the body of Christ MUST do more than pray and then hit the local Buffet line.

I’m in & I agree, to much bashing & not enough praying.

    1 Tim 2:1-3
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,

I’m in we should be praying for our leaders!

  • Jay

What’s the story with the backwards part?

    …sorry, new to the blog.

    • http://carolesmithturner.com Carole Turner

I hope Los doesn’t mind if I answer this but it’s “Backward” because Romney supporters pray for Obama and his stuff and Obama supporters pray for Romney and his stuff. It really is so unifying and life changing for the participants and I believe for the candidates and the country as well.

  • http://carolesmithturner.com Carole Turner

Last time we did this I wept, it was SO STINKIN’ POWERFUL!! SO excited!! I’m gonna pimp the dookie out of this!

    Los,

Dude… Prayer works. You know that, but I just wanted to let you know something. Once a month the church I attend holds what we call “Prayer Summit”. We pray for multiple things, from where our church is headed (on the small end) to various national and international concerns. And we worship and pray as a body. Its beautiful.

Here’s the kicker. Our church is fairly large (3000+ on a weekend) in a small city of about 14,000 people.

Now sit down for this. Last Prayer Summit we had almost 1000 people come out.

So what am I trying to say? In this town churches are many (I think 30 ish in the area??) people are waking up to the fact that PRAYER WORKS. Once a month, on a tuesday night, hundreds of people gather at Southland Church to interceed and pray. If one church can gather hundreds of people on a tuesday night, imagine what can happen when God’s people across the nation stand together.

I have been thinking about this since you first posted it and at first I didn’t want too. It’s so hard to pray for something you don’t stand for. But that’s not what this is about is it?! It’s about GOD moving and showing his face to whomever is president because not many people are gutsy enough to run this country and honestly no one can do it without The Lord. So I’m in. I want to pray for the other person and trust that The Lord will show himself to them. In every way.

And I hate all the debates. I’d rather pray. HA!

  • Heather

I’m praying now but I’m not and won’t sign up for twitter. I’m not going to give away who I’m praying for but I have fasted from sweets (SOOOO hard) during the past 24 hrs to pray for clarity of vision to be shown by both candidates so that the watchers will be clearly directed as to whom deserves their vote. I cannot watch the debate as I get so angry and feel hatred that I know God doesn’t have, instead of the love I’m supposed to feel, for one of the candidates. Neither of these candidates have professed Christ as saviour, and although one clearly in my mind is the one who has no vision for the country, BOTH clearly need Jesus. HE alone has the answers.

  • http://Www.queenieslittlekingdom Wanda

Wow!! That IS a challenge!! Doing it!

  • Ruth

Thanks for this reminder. It’s hard not to get caught up in the politics and lose sight of what’s really important. I think the next two weeks should be spent praying without ceasing for our leaders and for God’s will to be done.
