Ed Barker’s (Garzon lecture A) experiences growing up were marked by identity confusion and racism. Ed comes from a Native American background but it was evident that this was not something which he was encouraged to take pride in or to explore further. As a young person constantly being treated negatively, confusion began to take root and caused Ed to wonder what was wrong with him and why nobody would address the issue. Hays and Erford portray Native Americans as individuals and communities who typically take great pride in their heritage and ancestry. This was not the case in Ed’s situation.

Ed made it clear that his family was of a low socioeconomic status which seems to be consistent with the picture that Hays and Erford (2010) have given of where Native Americans tend to fit into the economic structure. I think it is incredible that Ed was able to overcome the obstacles he faced and that he did not succumb to the low expectations that those around him placed on him. Hays et al. also talked about how difficult it is for those in a low socioeconomic status to break out of that. Ed was one of the few who did so and he was quick to give the credit to the Lord for the direction his life took. This faith that was so foundational in his life allowed him to accept love “as he was” and despite earthly confusion regarding his identity, he knew that he belonged to Christ and this was all that mattered. Once he really began to grasp this, he was able to find his true identity in the Lord and be at peace with who he had been created as.

Although Ed was never overtly encouraged to embrace his Native heritage, certain aspects of it were evidenced in his life. His father taught him to hunt well and to depend on nobody but himself and his God. These values instilled in him from a young age allowed Ed to rise above the expectations placed on him and become someone who he was proud to be.

I feel that we are often taken out of our comfort zones, pushed and shoved out of our nests, because if not, we would never know what we could do with our wings, we would never see the horizon and the sun setting on it, we would never know that there’s something far better beyond where we are at the moment. It can hurt, but then later you say “thank you.” I have been pushed and shoved and have fallen out and away, so very, very, many, many times! And others around me have not! But then, the others haven’t seen what I have seen or felt what I have felt or been who I have been, they can’t become what I have become. I am me.”

We both have the word vulnerable for our word of the year. Your posts have inspired me greatly. That being said, would it be possible for me to be vulnerable and tell you something and simply ask for prayer in return? Because I can’t keep fighting alone. And so far I only have one person that I know locally that I feel I can trust to confess this too. It’s too embarrassing. But I’m trying to be vulnerable.

Have you ever noticed how quickly lines in the sand can change from wind, water or human influence? Through this group, we aspire to be that change through sharing Truth, embracing all people, being the Hands and Feet and empowering voices to speak for those who cannot. Homelessness, poverty, hunger, clean water, healthcare equality, sex trade, LGBTQ-nothing is off limits! The Lines in the Sand: women for social change is a place with open hearts and open minds for those of us who ache with that sense of responsibility for those who are marginalized-however that may look, wherever that may be and regardless of political or theological lines in the sand.

Nick, I am overjoyed to commit myself to you in front of our God and our family and friends. I am confident that God has chosen you to be my husband, that He is delighted to bring us together to create a new family, and that His will is being fulfilled today.

I choose you to be my husband and offer myself to you to be your wife. God has made you into a man of joy and integrity, of faith and of strength. I love your humor and your care for me and for other people. Your personality and character set you apart from all others. I am in awe when I think of how you have obeyed God’s calling, even when it cost you. You are the kind of man worth give my heart and my soul to, to be my companion for the rest of my life. Apart from my redemption in Christ, you are the greatest gift God has ever given me.

Nick, you are the love of my life and my soulmate. 1 John says, “We love because Christ first loved us.” And I love you with the strength the Lord because He first loved me. I accept you as my husband wholeheartedly with solemn commitment and a grateful heart. I commit to putting your needs and our family’s needs above and before my own. When life is sweet and full of laughter, I will love you. When the trials and storms of life shake us to our core, I will stand next to you. Even as we face a life of unknowns – with a lot to risk and to gain – I commit to you that I will spend the rest of my days with you learning how to treasure, protect, honor, and respect you.

When Christ submitted to the Father, it became the greatest act of love the world has ever known. With Christ as my strength, my example, and my Lord, I pledge to submit to you my love and my life. I will point you to Jesus and let you point me and our family to Him as well. I vow to love you out of the outpouring of Grace that God gives me. And by His power, I will remain faithful and steadfast to you. I will follow you, trusting that the Lord is guiding you as you lead our family. Beloved, I commit myself to you to be your wife, your biggest fan, and your closest friend.

Oh,…you keep thinking about how things might have been had THAT [awful thing] not happened. But it’s your wealth of experience that makes you rich. Spend it on hurting people. They need it so badly. … You don’t have to be in full-time ministry for Him to accomplish the kind of redemption I described…People in your workplace and your neighborhood are dying for hope…Dying to know there’s a God, and that He’s for them, not against them… Lives needing the kind of help you can give are surrounding you right now. Each one of them is worth the work

Matt. 5:43-47 “You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.

48 “In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”

    You see…

Main Point: Company kept is about heart. Impacting yours & influencing theirs.

Every person we talk with, do life with, spend time together, learn about one another, go to a ball game, night out to dinner, have over to the house… every person is impacting my life & I’m influencing theirs. While the percentage of each changes, it’s always both. But how do I know when it’s time to cut ties or invest more? Is there a point where it becomes so toxic we cannot breathe? Are you spiritually at a place where that relationship is beneficial to the both of you, just them, or is it suffocating you?

The most insightful lecture for me this week was the last one, “Breaking Free From Guilt, Shame, and the Past.” Being a single girl, I completely understand how sexuality is a hard topic to deal with while being a single, young adult. In all honesty, my choices in the past regarding my own sexuality have not always been so God-honoring, and this has been an area in which God has been dealing with me recently. Being able to understand why I have made the choices I have due to attachment and self esteem issues has been rather enlightening for me, as well as learning how to make better choices for myself, not just because it’s what God “wants me to do,” but more for the reasons that this is what He has called me to do, and so I will do it gladly in order to bring Him glory. However, just as the lecture addressed, it is not easy to come face to face with your sin and be automatically relieved of the memories of past choices. Learning to view things from God’s perspective isn’t in our automatic human nature, which is just another one of the reasons why we need Him so much more than we realize. The lecture also discussed how we prepare ourselves for assisting others in working through their own issues in this area. In a way, I’m grateful for my story so that I am able to use my experience in helping others cope with theirs.

WOW…. That is the guide to Gateway Christian Church student section. I had to edit it from last year.

Teens and sponsors love to interact with each other outside of the church. In addition to individuals meeting for accountability and prayer, we will go on various trips during the upcoming months in larger groups.

    FALL SPECIAL EVENTS

This fall we are volunteering at the International Crisis Aid 5k run on Saturday, September 24, helping pass out water bottles to participants and clean up the race track at Queeny Park afterwards. We are also having a “Pumpkin Palooza” during Collide Live on Wednesday, October 26.

    SPRING PURITY RETREAT

The Middle School and High School Purity Retreat will be held in March 2012. This will be an unforgettable trip, causing you to ponder what the Bible says about your relationship with the opposite sex.

    SUMMER TRIPS

Trips will be planned during the summer quarter, one for middle school and one for high school.

Middle School students will attend High Hill Christian Camp in 2012. Plan to come to an incredible “week-of-all-weeks” to grow closer to God, develop new friendships, and have fun—all at the same time!! More details available in the spring.

High School students will participate in another special mission trip during the summer of 2012—an experience that you will never forget. Christ will move, and so will you!! See Josh for more details in the spring.

    OTHER TRIPS

As specifics are finalized for each of the following, they will be communicated to teens and parents:

    · Senior Trip

    · Service Opportunities

    · Campus visits

    · Weekend conference at a Bible College

For more details or answers to questions about the student ministry, pick up a copy of the Parent Bridge, a communication piece available outside The Warehouse, To find out how to volunteer your time and talent with the teens, contact Josh Hough, Youth Pastor. He looks forward to hearing from you.

Took me a bit to remember why that was in my clipboard. Then I remembered. Matthew 6:34, was reading it earlier. Trying to make it my daily mantra. I looked the verse up earlier so I could write it down in my notebook and carry it with me.

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

Team, I am going to be gone the last week in September, visiting the Mattix family and helping them move. I will be working on eval stuff away from my desk for a few days. Can someone oversee Lodge clean up, food move to galley, rearranging beds back to normal configuration, along with any big group clean up that would be good to get done? Thanks! Not sure exactly when people are leaving but have communicated my desire for them to help clean the lodge.

“Ok, here’re my expounded upon thoughts:

Firstly, I do, generally speaking, support the right of teachers and other public workers to strike and have organized representation. Why should they give up the right to present a united front and have a spokesperson/group merely because they receive their paycheck from the state/city/whatever? I don’t think they should have to. There is voice and power in numbers, and unions are a part of facilitating that for workers regardless of who their employer is.

I also tend to support this strike. Now, I will say that it needs to a short strike. A prolonged strike will end up being detrimental to everyone involved. I don’t think it will end up being prolonged since it seems the negotiations are close, but there was some bit of sticking that needed a “We’re serious” action.

1—regarding salary: Yes, there is now a 16% raise on the table. This is over 4 years, though. Previously, the city/mayor had agreed to a 4% raise. This was when they were well aware of the budget for the year. Then, the mayor canceled the raises—nixed a negotiated contract with no negotiations. That was a tacky move on his part. He also pushed for an added 90 minutes to the school day despite the canceled raises. Then there was agreement to hire additional teachers to help spread the workload of the additional 90 minutes a day. Which seems to fly in the face of “We don’t have enough money for the raises we already promised you.” Then, of course, there’s the siphoning off of money to private/charter schools while saying there isn’t enough money for the schools that are there. At any rate, as I understand it, the salary negotiations are looking to be favorably worked out. But that leads to the second sticking point, which is a big one—

2—The mayor wants more high-stakes testing in exchange for agreeing to the raises. This ties teacher and school evaluations to a simplistic and inequitable metric, especially since there is no adjustment for factors outside of the teachers’ control that significantly impact student performance throughout the year and particularly on tests like poverty and homelessness. Socio-economic factors are one of the biggest influences on the student success gap and on school success (by numeric metrics, at any rate) in general. Tying teacher evaluations almost solely to high-stakes test scores is overly simplistic, short-sighted, fails to account for a great deal of variables involved, and does nothing to further good education or help actual student achievement. It’s also not well in line with where education needs to go and where the Common Core is meant to lead students.

3—The other issue that seems to be at stake here is regarding what happens to teachers if schools need to or are forced to close. This seems to be in relation to financial downsizing, not performance-based closings. * The city/mayor is proposing relocation or a three-month severance package for those teachers, and the union wants a provision for down-sized teachers to be recalled when more teachers are needed again (should down-sizing be necessary) rather than hiring new teachers when teachers are needed. I get that. These teachers already have a vested interest in the system, and if they would like to be recalled into the system as soon as a new position comes available, they should have that option.

So, there’s my take on the matter. I think the action was necessary to prove the importance of these issues (my understanding is the high-stakes testing is the supreme motivator for this move). If it drags out more than a few day, maybe a week, though, it will start to undermine its own good. Then it will become detrimental to the students, and therefore to the teachers. There needs to be a contract agreement before then.

*Performance-based school closures is a tangental part of this whole struggle. I understand the motivation behind it, and I understand why it’s part of the current federal education direction. On the other hand, you are left with some big issues, most importantly: what do you do with the students in these schools? This becomes an even bigger issue considering that, as I noted above, the socio-economic standing of the students and the area (why oh why is school funding still tied to property taxes. *sigh*) is the most significant impacter of student and school success. Schools in poor areas have lower performance rates. This is something that needs to be considered and accounted for when dealing with education reform. /slight rabbit trail.”

Kierkegaard challenges the view that meaning can be found outside of an intentional experience with the text, “looking ‘in’ the mirror.” This is not done through a systematic historical-grammatical analysis, nor an ‘interpretive escapism’ that avoids implied action. You listen to what you read and you ask what it is saying to you.

A tutorial on how to make a binding for a quilt.

“Self-Binding Using Backing Fabric – With Mitered Corners ”

    By: Penny Halgren

You can use the backing of the quilt and roll it over the edges to make a binding that attaches to the quilt top.

Or, you can use the quilt top and roll it over the edges to make a binding that attaches to the back.

Etc., etc. ad nauseum to most non-quilters !

    Happy Quilting!

*ok* the reason that was on my clipboard is I was tweeting earlier about how GAP actually printed shirts with those words on them. Crazy huh!? They stopped selling them on Monday but still have not issued a formal apology.

This was a fun idea and good on-line conversation starter!

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your

new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created
to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
