When I initially saw this I thought it was hilarious…
Especially the served verse. [that link is for those of you less used to slang and scared of Urban Dictionary dot com]
Then I thought it was awful…
Then I thought it was amazing…
Then I thought it was sacrilegious…
Then I thought…
I wonder what JESUS thinks?

After reading John Eldridge’s “Beautiful Outlaw” I landed here…
I think Jesus thinks it’s hilarious.
I’ve learned a few things about the personality of Jesus.
He was a whimsical man with an amazing sense of humor.
He wasn’t this boring, serious, drab man.
No group of obnoxious and loud fisherman would have dropped their nets and followed that man.
I think He laughs at playful teasing of Himself and dished it out as well.

Just as He messed with His 2 disciples on the Road to Emmaus.
Talk about the ultimate of jokes…
Disguise yourself the day of your resurrection, walk with 2 of your boys and not let them know who you are, walk for hours, act like you are “continuing on”, have dinner, when they finally recognize you…poof, you disappear.

I think that reverencey must not be mistaken with stiffness.
We must never lose sight of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice and the honor we pay Him…
But nobody can fall in love with a Hallmark card.
They will fall in love with Jesus who is full of playfulness, intensity, focus, and radical grace.
So here is what I think Jesus thought about this picture…
I think He saw it and said…
“Now that’s funny…So anyways, about this election thing happening in the states…”

What do you think about the image above and what do you think Jesus thinks about it?

I don’t mind him bustin’ a move, but why is He in his underwear?

        “Loins, bro.”

Just shot water out my nose. While sitting in my Bible school class. While a classmate was conducting a fake funeral.

        You big jerk.

I think it is also hilarious! If we continue to walk around with something stuck up in us, how ever do we relate to a hurting world around us? Those hurting the most think this is the funniest thing ever. Why can’t those that love the man “serving” laugh at this too? It’s great!

I agree Carlos! We were made in His image which I believe includes the humour. I am sure that He enjoys the crazy, silly things my kids say even more than I do. I have often pictured him laughing and shaking his head at their antics. I’m sure it’s followed by something similar to ‘I sure do love those guys.’

I think Jesus would wonder why the floor is so cold.

  • JeannaB

Yeah, i feel pretty certain that God has a pretty awesome sense of humor and i think a lot of people think so too even if they are too scared of their “religion” to admit it… why else would someone like Acuff become so popular?…. folks like to laugh, and from all appearances, Jesus has his big boy undies on and can take it :)

  • Kyle

This is great Los. I believe Jesus gets a good laugh from a lot of the ridiculous stuff we do. If God didn’t think laughing was important he wouldn’t have wired us for the emotion. After all isn’t humility the ability to laugh at yourself sometimes.

    Funny!

  • JR

Hilarious! Great points man! I have always wondered why all the paintings and depictions of Christ are of him looking sooo serious.

Well, i guess im the first stiff to reply to this post. I think that about 4-5 years ago when i was in college i wouldve thout that Jesus would have found this pretty funny… But in recent years i’m starting to second guess these things. My feelings are typically focused at more of the “family guy” type poking at Jesus – clearly irreligious people poking fun at a God that they think is silly to believe in in the first place. I dont know where this picture came from but i guess a question would be what was the creator’s original intent – to portray Jesus as a fun loving type of a guy, or to make fun of a Jesus that they think is ridiculous in the first place.

Especially after watching Francis Chans “basic:Fear God” video, i think we often times want to be the judge of what God likes and doesn’t like. Id rather not decide that i absolutley know that Jesus would love this dipiction of himself. We can speculate, but i dont think we can know.

And im not one to portray Jesus as a hollow faced-man who walks around looking sad all the time. Even i tend to think that he and the disciples had a great time the night that they had a bowl of fish chili for lunch (if you know what i mean). But even still id rather not say as a fact that jesus would find this picture hiilarious and not in any way offensive

      I Co-Sign this with Me.eliz

    • yankeegospelgirl

Co-sign and go one step further: This is sacrilegious, and what’s more, it’s not even art. There’s lots of garbage like this out there. Let’s not pretend it’s anything special, admit it’s stupid and disrespectful and that yes, Jesus would agree, and move on.

  • cathy

Hilarious…( However,I too am curious about the “loin cloth” and why Jesus is almost incandescently pale) but probably will not post this on the church bulletin board any time soon :)

  • Sarah

I think that people have a huge misconception of Jesus. They think of him as only being super serious. If you look around they’re are a lot of funny people and things in this world. He created them all and we are made in His image and if these things are true he must have a bigger sense of humor then any of us could possible imagine. I first figured this out when my husband and I got pregnant the 4th time on birth control. Jesus is the God who hears me, the God who tells me to shhh when I’m not listening, the God who loves me, the God who speaks to me, the God who provides for me, plus so much more, but he is also the God that makes me ROFL because he is so hilarious! I love Him! :)

I like what you said here…a lot:

“I think that reverencey must not be mistaken with stiffness. We must never lose sight of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice and the honor we pay Him… But nobody can fall in love with a Hallmark card. They will fall in love with Jesus who is full of playfulness, intensity, focus, and radical grace.”

    Yes.

  • Charmaine

I think you’re totally right! Jesus definitely had a great sense of humor!!! Just read the Gospel, especially John (my personal fave) sometimes I find myself cracking up!!! I’m like ‘Jesus is killing’ it!?!’

  • Laura

I think in the next frame some of those Bishops will be peeling off their robes, tossing their hats in the air and joining him in the dance! So should we all !

  • Kelly

Or when he was all casual, going for a stroll on the water and was like, “hey guys, what’s up?”

  • kenny

I hope I don’t ignite too many rear ends here. I am really trying to just post what I feel relating to this picture.

If it is blasphemous, so be it. We don’t need to be “that religion” that stones, beheads, and otherwise tortures people to death for being blasphemous.

And I don’t think the Bishops would necessarily strip down to their loins and bust a move. They likely just admonished Jesus for dancing on the Sabbath, or desecrating their sanctum, or walking around THEIR church in his underwear.

Man, I hope I am wrong. I hate to be so dang judgmental.

Personally, I want a savior who is here to serve, by both definitions. Sometimes, we need to know who rules the ring.

  • James Barker

Its interesting to think of Jesus’ sense of humor… thinking of the all the things that he did, my mind wandered to the water into wine bit. I wonder if Jesus would ever switch up the drinks on his disciples? If they were drinking water switch to wine, and when they realize what happened switch back again? One thing that in the midst of reading, even with the disciples on the road to Emmaus is that his humor isn’t mean, it still comes back to prove that he is Lord!

  • JB

thanks for the giggle this morning los! Jesus definately has a sense of humor…one of the countless things I heart about him! :-)

  • http://marleeward.com Marlee

I’d like to think Jesus would think this is funny, but I’m not sure.

I don’t ever *see* him laugh in the Bible. And, I suppose you could interpret his apparition on the Road to Emmaus as a practical joke, but I don’t see that (from my perspective) in his personality.

I think God has a bolder sense of humor than Jesus based on what I can perceive.

Nevertheless, I don’t think he’d think it’s sacrilegious. I don’t think Jesus would ever want to be so holy he couldn’t be related to – he was always moving towards relationship. So, if this is how we relate (with humor and love), I don’t think he’d care much at all.

Looks like we’ve got one more thing to look forward to learning on the other side of this life.

If you look at Luke 14:15-21 there’s a joke hidden in Jesus’ parable. A common rabbinical joke telling method of the time was to set something up with the first example, confirm it with the second, and then leave something out in the third to make the joke. The three people who refuse to come to the banquet are saying:

    I just bought a field
    I must try it out
    Please excuse me

    I just bought oxen
    I must try them out
    Please excuse me

    I just got married
    (I must try her out)
    Please excuse me

[To give credit where credit is due, this examination of Luke 14 came from a paper by Bruce W. Longenecker, “A Humorous Jesus? Orality, Structure and Characteristics in Luke 14:15-24, and Beyond.” Biblical Interpretation 16 (2008):179-204). ]

  • clay Harryman

I always wondered if he did the “pull my finger” trick. Nit at the last supper, but maybe out walking with the twelve…

    • Doug

Of course. Probably happened all the time with the twelve. How else do you think James & John came to be called the Sons of Thunder?

  • http://www.prayerpunk.wordpress.com PrayerPunk

Of course God has a sense of humor, just look at the duck billed platypus! Oh and Kenny, lay off the Bishops. I know we Catholics can be a little legalistic, but just look at all the Catholic nations of the world, they like to drink and party. I know for a fact John Paul II would have jumped right in there with JC!

  • http://ragamuffinpc.com PC

I think you quote the wrong translation. It was supposed to say.

Jesus did not come GET served…

  • B.Rad

The pic? Awesome. The scripture reference? Epic
Movie idea? “Step Up 2 The Savior”.

  • Liam

When John’s disciples and the Pharisees are fasting and Jesus’ disciples aren’t, Jesus is asked what’s up with that. He then likens being with Him to celebrating with a bridegroom. He wanted children to come to him, He was comfortable with them. It’s safe to say He didn’t spend His time on earth without joy and fun.

And though each person has different tastes, humour itself is a universal thing, each person has appreciation for it in some manner. Being made in His likeness, I’d say it’s something He possess too.

  • Tim

I think this attacks Catholic orthodoxy, which is a beautiful ancient thing. Read G.K. Chesterton’s Orthodoxy. Skip to the last page and read the conclusion. Yes, God certainly has a sense of humor; but, assailing Catholics, like this image is intended to do, is not a healthy rendering of it…

  • http://www.chrisburke.ca Chris Burke

Los, I think you hit a home run here.. For years I’ve been talking to students about how Jesus wasn’t some stiff neck prude.. In fact, one of the images I’ve used that gets the most head turns is the “last supper” except it’s Jesus at the turntables and the rest of the party guests having a good time.. I often caption it “move over last supper, it was a party”

Belief is both light and strength. Yes, one who acquires true belief may challenge the whole universe and be saved from the pressure of events in accordance with the strength of his belief. Saying, “I place my trust in God,” he travels through the mountainous waves of events in the ship of life in complete safety. He entrusts all his burdens to the hand of power of the Absolutely Powerful One, voyages through the world in ease, then takes his rest in the Intermediate Realm. Later he may fly up to Paradise in order to enter eternal happiness. Otherwise, if he does not rely on God, rather than flying, the burdens of the world will drag him down to the lowest of the low. That is to say, belief necessitates affirmation of Divine unity, affirmation of Divine unity necessitates submission to God, submission to God necessitates reliance on God, and reliance on God necessarily leads to happiness in this world and the next. But do not misunderstand this, reliance on God is not to reject causes altogether; it is rather to know that causes are a veil to the hand of power and have recourse to them. Knowing that attempting causes is a sort of active prayer, it is to seek the effects only from Almighty God, recognize that the results are from Him alone, and to be thankful to Him.From Risalei Nur collection

You actually can fall in love with a hallmark card. Far too many people have. That’s not the problem. The problem is, a hallmark card won’t love you back.

  • http://www.bradhuebert.com Brad Huebert

Hmmm. I don’t like the either/or of this discussion.

Does Jesus have a sense of humour? If yes, then he’d love this.

If he doesn’t have a sense of humour, then he’d hate it.

What if a third option exists: He has a sense of humour, but still finds this sacrilegious?

What Eldredge shows us in Beautiful Outlaw is that Jesus has a personality, his own unique and delightful personality. Not that he’s an ENFJ.

So a fourth option would be, Jesus has a great sense of humour, but this isn’t his kind of joke.

    • yankeegospelgirl

For one thing, if Jesus finds this funny he’s way too easily tickled.

  • http://www.joelzehring.wordpress.com Joel Zehring

That’s not Jesus. It’s Jesus™. This picture doesn’t have anything to do with the real, living Jesus. It’s a cartoon making light of a religious mascot manufactured by churchianity.

I think we should not compare the real JESUS with that of the picture above. you guys should visit http://www.adeseye.com for daily true word of God

I think it is hilarious and I think He is not overly concerned about the election, His plan does not depend on Dem or Pub winning.

“no, seriously, peter. you can hop out of the boat and walk over here to me.”

of course he had a sense of humor.
