My dad was a preacher.
Brian’s dad drove a school bus.
Tim’s dad was a comedian.
But John’s dad. Johns dad was an opera singer. An opera singer.
Poor John.
We let him have it.
And that kid in the picture above?
Oh the horror.

What was your dad’s job while you were growing up?

My dad was a civil engineer. I guess technically he still is, but for the last several years he’s only been able to get work being contracted out to work in disaster relief areas. He spent three years in Louisiana working to evaluate schools for damage, and he is currently in New Zealand because of earthquake damage in Christchurch. He’s also worked in Mississippi, Iowa, Missouri, and Utah.

Property appraiser. And he was one of these really cool guys who didn’t let his profession define who he was. When he retired in 1995, he left the office and never looked back. The latest 17 years of his life have been filled with spending time with my mom, spoiling his grandchildren, and some epic fishing trips. I want to be like that when I grow up.

My Dad was a drug dealer.

Really he worked in pharmaceutical sales. But that was my brother’s answer in 1st grade which resulted in my mother being called into the principal’s office (they were very concerned, then very embarrassed).

    • HeatherEV

      That’s awesome.

  • Jonathan

My father has had several jobs over the years including certified accountant, carpet installer, furniture salesman, luggage salesman, retail store manager, Bible Camp director and missionary.
I know him best as Dad!
    :)

  • Kit

My dad had several jobs, many times 2 at once but his main job was as a local police officer. He retired when I was in high school. At his death, one man came to the funeral and told my brother “your dad never arrested me when I didn’t deserve it.” I think that is a fantastic statement for someone to say about a policeman.

  • Josh

My parents were divorced, and my dad told me he was a body guard in the military. Every once in awhile he would protect high profile people from the US in other countries. Like, my childhood hero, Michael Jordan. I told all my friends. They called me and him a liar. I got into lots of fights because of it. Only to find as an adult he was lieing to me. Oh well. Now, he is a security guard at a little casino in OK. HA!

Dad has worked at many things … usually more than one at a time. In my formative years he was a policeman who had a side job of cleaning ip housing tracts in Southern California. He ran an oilfield service rig for years, then an oilfield casing crew, was a correctional officer and finally retired again a few years ago, but kept “working” as a landlord. He has always bought and fixed up houses and sold them. He’s a happy and devoted grandfather and great grandfather, and a role model of old-fasioned work ethic.

My dad was a meat cutter for a period, then a third shift taxi driver in our small town. Most of the time when I was a teen though, he was the stay at home dad. Now he has been working with trains helping transport people and such.

My dad was a salesman. Windows & insulation. Power washers. Insurance. Pellet stoves. What he was selling didn’t matter. He just sold stuff.

  • http://www.rickknowles.net Rick

My dad went from being a dairy farmer to delivering babies. I am mad proud of the commitment he made to go through med school. On the other hand, having your dad be a gynecologist/obstetrician while you’re in high school welcomes a lot of jokes. I still remember my friend asking me “so birth control must be like candy at your house?” Thanks pops.
