[From the movie Salvation Blvd.]

Billboards with pictures of the senior pastor.
Worship leaders who pay more attention to their Sunday sets than their daily spouse. (Raises hand)
Mothers who look at their style of parenting as superior than others.
Church staff who look with pity at “smaller churches”

These are the norm in our society.
And they are laced with Pride.
Sometimes accidental.
Pride is such a hard thing to stray away from as Christians.
Because we are human.
But our humanity is no excuse.
The Lord speaks to us through His prophet Jeremiah…

Hear and pay attention,
do not be arrogant,
for the Lord has spoken.
Give glory to the Lord your God
before he brings the darkness,
before your feet stumble
on the darkening hills.
You hope for light,
but he will turn it to utter darkness
and change it to deep gloom.
If you do not listen,
I will weep in secret
because of your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly,
overflowing with tears,
because the Lord’s flock will be taken captive.
Jeremiah 13:15-17

Um.
This causes this disaster of an arrogant man to take note.
DO NOT BE ARROGANT THE LORD HAS SPOKEN.
HE WILL BRING DARKNESS
HE WILL WEEP IN HIS SADNESS FOR US BECAUSE WE WILL BE CAPTIVE.

I’m just telling you what the Bible says.
So today…
Take your eyes off your amazing voice, rapidly growing church, social media stats, or perfectly behaved children
And give glory to the Lord your God.
He LITERALLY will bring darkness AND weep in sadness.
Trust me.
I know.

All For Him Today.
How have you seen Pride and Arrogance creep into the Christian community?

THANKS FOR THE HEART CHECK CARLOS.

I think there is too much pride… I’m not saying this happens everywhere but I see a lot of different Church communities looking down on other Churches in the area… All Churches are different in someway doesn’t make them bad… As long as they are preaching the correct message then we shouldn’t have a beef with other Churches around us. It’s called respect and accepting differences.

Thanks for sharing an interesting topic. =]

All for Him indeed. Reminds me of 1 Corinthians 4:7 “For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?”

I have to remind myself often…everything I have is a gift from Him and for Him.

    Thanks for helping me remember.

If I’m honest… I see pride and arrogance in the Christian community far to often, at least once a day — every time I look in the mirror.

Sad thing is at the same time I tend to judge harshly those who OUTWARDLY show these things yet I let myself off the hook because I show my arrogance as openly. I hide it… but that doesn’t make it any better does it?

I’d love to live in a community with Pierce Brosnan as the pastor.

I think the scarier issue is why are these guys that feel the need to be on billboards always kinda lecherous looking – as in they may very well be scoping out your teen daughter as we speak kind of lecherous. Freaky.

Yes, I have. Because I’m in the Christian community.

I’m proud to say I don’t have this problem… Oh.

This reminds me of the church I attended in high school. They really had the attitude of “we’re chosen, elected by God; you’re not.” They made snide comments about the “heathen” Methodist church a block down. I actually ended up at that “heathen” church and found them to be very nice, humble, and Christ-like. They fed all the homeless that came to their door, the homeless that the other churches in that two-block area turned away (true story).

I’ve seen this in preachers/worship leader, etc. who do the “work” of God because they want to me known and made famous. Can’t tell you how many Christians I know that really desire to be known and they have excused their desire, that God wants us to prosper.

I believe it’s in our nature, to look after ourselves and own desires. I believe we all start off with good intentions in doing the will of the Father, but somewhere, some how we stop being true to ourselves and God in our motives. Like Ben said, “HEART CHECK.”
As followers we must always do heart checks to know the motive of it.

Yes, we have all be guilty of this at some time or another. For many years I attended a church that was prideful about their doctrine. We all thought we were the best church in town because we had the “correct doctrine” and therefore were in the truth. Boy, how wrong we all were…

We must all be willing to learn everyday. Never let pride get in the way of even learning from a little child.

    Thanks for the gut check.

Thanks. I love when God smacks me in the face. Sometimes we feel that we are doing the work of God when we are merely spinning plates and being too busy to be with God.

I was once in a church which was unfortunately influenced by pride and hidden resentment. Yuck! It came from the TOP and trickled its way DOWN. The congregation was never fully employed to use their talents for the Lord due to the unresolved hurt that the leaders held on to. Matter of fact, no one had a title(ie., minister, deacon, evangelist, ect.) except for a few handful which eventually left the ministry a few years after my family and I were forced out(another story). I still pray for them from time to time. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ.
