To Losiah’s Birth Father…On Losiah’s Birthday…

When he laughs that Elmo laugh…
I can imagine you filling a room with your contagious laugh.
When his smile lights up the room…
I can imagine your smile lighting up the fishing docks you work at.
His compassionate heart…
I know you probably give away more fish than you can afford to.
His eyes…
I see you when I look in them.
The determination in his face when we wrestle…
I can see the determination in your face when you pull in the nets.

He’s 6 today…
I know you know this…
And on days like today…
I know there are moments…
You look up and wonder…
And I’m here…
On the other side of the planet…
Staring right up and wondering as well…
But I’m also wanting you to know…
I’m doing the best I can.
He is growing up so well.
Today he woke full of joy.
And I’m telling him of what a great man you are.
And how proud you would be of him.
Because I am.
And I know you are too.
Although I have never met you sir…
Your son shows me glimpses of you and your spirit everyday.
Thank you for him.
Maybe one day I can shake your hand and look you in the eye and tell you myself…

i truly hope you get that chance one day… i was adopted as an infant, and had the opportunity to meet my birthparents when i was 27. the chance to thank them for giving me life and making a life-affirming decision was a.ma.z.ing, and something not everyone gets to do.

With tears streaming down my cheeks, I thank you for sharing this amazing moment with us here. I have had it in my heart to adopt for my entire life, but never thought of birth parents this way. Amazing words Los! To think God loves this little boy more than you is a hard thing to fathom but thankful for this adoption relationship in my own life. I haven’t spoken to my biological father in 22 years until Saturday mostly because he is going to hospice soon. Although he abandoned my mother, sister and myself, I was able to share the gospel of God’s grace with him in light of both of our depravity and he agreed. I personally struggle with not having the love of an earthly father (like yours with Losiah) but so much more thankful for the Father’s love! My issues because of this have made me legalistic in spending time with my own son but I am dealing with this.
